Our Break Week

OK, so this week was a true break for us. Meaning, I didn't print out any math or Language Arts worksheets and we didn't do any text book work at all. The only print outs I did do were for Ash Wednesday and they were coloring sheets. The only two things that were mandatory all week long were the Bible and reading.

So, how did our week pan out?

Monday we did 90% of our errand running for the month. It was the third after all and this is when we always do it.

Tuesday we were pleasantly surprised when the girls took it upon themselves to write and illustrate to very short stories! The that night I fell asleep snuggling YCJ with Moragon on the couch for the first time in what felt like forever!

On Wednesday we had Ash Wednesday. So we had coloring sheets, a more in depth lesson for religion, mass, and a lot of discussion about what we should "give up" for Lent. I also started my 40 Bags in 40 Days Challenge with a very quick and simple clean up of my coffee table and part of my kitchen counter. The girls also took it upon themselves to completely redecorate my refrigerator. The campers watched some videos and prayed along with some audios on Holy Heroes for the Lenten Adventures. Then we tore up the "evil twins" we made earlier this winter and pledged to try to never do those "bad" things again.

I still haven't found a home for my jeans or long sleeved
shirts yet, however.
Thursday was full of some good things. Peanut (prek/K) read an entire book about opposites!!! YCJ (third grade) got more than halfway through her first "real" chapter book!!! I actually managed to clean off my dresser and fill two BIG bags of clothing to go to charity! ECJ's doctor appointment went well and our fears were eased about his lack of growth, we're not to worry about it unless he hits 14 (two years from now) and still hasn't hit a good growth spurt and then we'll see a specialist. But, for now he's still just a late bloomer in that department.
We had a lovely Friday at Grandma's house. We helped her clean out their "storage" room (really just a no longer used bedroom) and organize it. We were able to visit for several hours while we were there as well. ECJ (sixth grade) had spent a lot of time reading this week and finished one chapter book only to begin another one! There's one more month of Book IT! and we're right on target! Each camper has managed to get a sticker for their passports to reading every month! We even did a quick stop in the morning to walk on the frozen lake, but I was too busy keeping my balance to snap any pictures.

As for this weekend we're finally going to take down the "porch tree/ valentines tree". Continue with our 40 bags in 40 days. Perhaps even do some items on our Winter Bucket List . We've decided that it is very likely not all of the items will be checked off this time, and that's just fine! Other than that we're simply going to relax and read some more. We might even be able to get in some outside time tomorrow afternoon! We're well rested now and ready to get back to the more serious side of learning.

  1. I didn't realize you had been concerned about your son's growth. I'm glad it wasn't anything serious. Looks like you had a great week of organizing going on and getting thinks done!

    1. Sylvia, I don't mention it often but ECJ is 12 and about the 1% for height. It is a bit nerve wracking at times. But, I love out new ped. and he took the time to talk to both ECJ and I about it. It was a good week! Thanks! :)

  2. It looks like a great week of rest and reading. We are looking forward to a week like that in two weeks.

    1. It's the first "real" break week we've had all year other than our short Christmas break. Usually I'll call a break week but it's really just a shortened school week lol. We really enjoyed it and I will be scheduling more into our time on purpose from now on. We needed it to recharge.

  3. I am glad to hear there isn't anything to worry about with ECJ's growth. Philip is very small for his age due partly to genetics and partially to chemo stunting his growth. I measured him last week and he is 4' 3.5".

I have started the 40 bags in 40 days challenge. So far 2 recycling bins from our homeschool room, a box of old electronics and I cleaned out two kitchen cupboards resulting in a bag split between the garbage and recycling.

    1. Such trying things God puts before us at times. My prayers and heart is with you.

Isn't the sense of accomplishment of a job well done so nice when you get those bags filled? My friend pointed the old saying out to me "Cleanliness is next to Godliness" that I'd simply hadn't realized should belong to areas people don't regularly see (like my dresser or closets). With less clutter I'm already finding it easier to think and we've barely begun!

    2. Yes, it is a great feeling to have those area cleared. I find myself going in to rooms just to absorb the openness. I also take pride in posting pictures on my blog.

I just read the other replies. Philip is just under 1% on both height and weight. He is under the care of an endocrinologist and I still can't spell that with out the spell checker. They did wait a number of years after treatment to see if his growth would fix itself. When it didn't they checked various hormone levels and those were normal. So for us there is nothing to do but wait. He gets seen once a year. They expect that he will hit full height it will just take him awhile longer.

    3. ECJ is 1% on height and 5% on weight. He, however, is just a "late bloomer" everything appears fine on all tests. I'm so glad that Phillip seems to be doing well. I think for us parents part of the hardest things we have to do is "wait and see". We always want to "fix" things and "make it better". ECJ often complains that he is so short and his early childhood story was a hard one (he's asked me to never go into detail about it on the blog so I won't), the only thing I can tell him is, "God has great plans for you son, remember that often the best things take the longest to happen."

  4. It sounds like a wonderful week, and even though you called it a "break" week, I saw much wonderful learning and activities going on! That's awesome. :-) I am working on the 40 bags challenge, as well. Have a great weekend! God bless!

    1. Lisa, nothing that happened this week (other than the visit to Grandma's house) was actually planned! It made me happy to see it all happen. Totally loving the 40 bags challenge!
